NOW HIRING: FICTION EDITOR
The Ex-Puritan is currently seeking candidates with strong editorial skills who are passionate about short fiction for the role of Fiction Editor, starting with the Fall 2026 issue (beginning in August 2026). The Ex-Puritan is one of Canada’s most respected literary magazines, with a mandate to publish excellent poetry, prose, reviews, interviews, non-fiction, and hybrid works.
This is a volunteer position, currently receiving a $250 honorarium per quarterly issue.
The Fiction Editor’s Responsibilities include:
Reading fiction submissions (supported by a team of volunteer first readers)
Soliciting fiction submissions as needed
Selecting three fiction pieces per issue and sending out acceptance emails
Editing accepted pieces and coordinating with authors to meet publishing deadlines
Participating in masthead meetings
Supporting the activities of the magazine (contests, events, etc.)
Actively working to diversify authors published, considering representation from disabled writers, BIPOC writers, 2SLGBTQIA+ writers, and other marginalized voices
Qualified candidates will have:
Knowledge of and interest in contemporary Canadian literature and literary communities, with a focus on short fiction
Editorial experience
Excellent communication skills and an ability to engage with authors in a professional and supportive manner
An ability to work independently and as part of a team
An ability to effectively manage tasks and meet deadline
