Issue 52: Winter 2021 Has Arrived!

Dear Readers,

As another month comes to a close and the weather keeps reminding us that spring is still a ways away, I'm happy to announce that Issue 52: Winter 2020 has finally arrive! Grab a cup of something warm, settle in, and dive into our latest offering of fiction, poetry, essays, interviews, and reviews.

This issue’s fiction features “Stupid and Ugly” by Horacio Castellanos Moya, (translated by Katherine Silver), “Funeral Stories” by Arreshy Young, and “Coke for Life” by William John Wither.

In poetry, check out “Nice for What” by Shane Book, “Upon losing my gold star & being confronted by Diana, I, Callisto, tell my story” by Annick MacAskill, “The Twins” by Prudence Gendron, two poems by Adrian de Leon, “Da Lum Da Lam” by Sahar Golshan, “Letter Sabotaged by Empty Stomach” by Eric Wang, “At the Abandoned Hacienda” by Lis Sanchez, and  “Ironweed” by Jan Conn.

In this season’s essays, explore Coyote Shook’s graphic essay “Emily in the Tropics” and Lazarus Trubman’s essay “A Casual Chat with a KGB Major.”

In this issue’s interview section, read the conversation between Mirae Lee and Harriet Kim as they reflect on the initial ideas for choa magazine, their Korean diasporic experiences through books, language, and storytelling, and the need for a care-based focus in this kind of work. Read on as Annick MacAskill and Anne Simpson discuss their new collections and ask each other questions about their respective writing practises, and Carolyne Van Der Meer and Shira Nayman discuss writing, genre, and literary mothers.

Finally, this issue’s reviews section features a review of Leanne Betasamosake Simpson’s Noopiming: The Cure for White Ladies by Cody Caetano and a review of Klara du Plessis’s Hell Light Flesh by Alexei Perry Cox.

This issue will be the last issue for our publisher and Town Crier blog manager, Jason Freure. Jason has been with The Puritan since 2013. He took over as publisher four years ago and has helped the magazine grow immensely! We’re sad to see him go but so very grateful for all that he's done. Wishing you all the best, Jason!

And with that we present Issue 52. We hope you enjoy our very latest.

All the best,

The Editors
