The Puritan Is Looking for a Publisher

The Puritan is looking for a new Publisher. This is a leadership role at one of Canada’s longest-running online magazines. The Puritan has grown rapidly in the last several years, and with that growth has come increased responsibility to the publishing industry and the Canadian literary world. You will be a key member guiding a growing organization.

This is a voluntary position that comes with a $2,000 annual honorarium. Applicants should live in the Greater Toronto Area.

The Publisher will:

  • Make key decisions regarding the magazine’s goals and projects with the Editor in Chief.
  • Write grant applications for the magazine alongside the Editor in Chief.
  • Budget and track all of the organization’s finances.
  • Pay magazine staff and contributors with the help of the Managing Editor.
  • Hire operations staff and editors alongside the Editor in Chief.
  • Manage third-party services (i.e., submissions manager, web security, web hosting, accounting).
  • Report the annual budget to the Board of Directors.
  • Brainstorm and help organize fundraising efforts, including events.
  • Sit on the Board of Directors.
  • Help the organization respond to emergent situations.

Qualified candidates will have:

  • Knowledge of and interest in contemporary Canadian literature and literary communities.
  • Proficiency with MS programs and Google Mail/Docs.
  • The ability to meet, set, and enforce strict deadlines.
  • The ability to work well with others and a willingness to learn how to lead a team.              

These skills are a plus:

  • Working knowledge of WordPress.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Press Stylebook.
