The Puritan Is Hiring a Volunteer Head of Publicity

A new year, a new opportunity to join The Puritan team! As of February 2020, we are looking for a new volunteer Head of Publicity, and we want to extend an invitation for you to throw your hat in the ring. Like many literary magazines, The Puritan relies on a lively social media network to get the word out about new work and upcoming events. As leader of the publicity team, the Head of Publicity will need to engage with our readers and the wider literary community through our various social media channels. But social media is only the beginning. The Head of Publicity is also in charge of managing The Puritan’s publicity assistant program. Publicity agents are limited-term volunteers who help promote our issue launches, writing contest, and connect with the public. Many past publicity assistants have gone on to fill editorial and operational roles at the magazine. It’s one of our most important programs and has been integral to keeping this magazine running for over 10 years. The Head of Publicity fulfills an important leadership role in the magazine as a whole, and we need someone who wants to help steer a growing Canadian literary magazine. As Head of Publicity, you will be in charge of:
  • Managing our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts
  • Hiring, training, and managing two rounds of publicity interns each year
  • Attending masthead meetings where editors and operation staff meet to debrief after issue launches and discuss future plans
  • Assist in promoting events
As with all of the magazine’s leadership positions, this is a volunteer position with a small honorarium of $1000 per year. Interested candidates should familiarize themselves with the magazine, its history, and the work it publishes, then send a cover letter and resume (or CV) as .doc, .docx, or .pdf attachment to [email protected]. Cover letters should answer the following questions: 1) What draws you to The Puritan in particular? 2) What experience do you have in publicity and/social media? 3) What knowledge do you have of the current Canadian literature scene? and 4) What experience makes you specifically suited for a role as the Head of Publicity? Please also send your Twitter and Instagram handles. The Puritan is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion and prioritizes applications from candidates who identify with historically marginalized groups and underserved communities. First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples or Indigenous peoples of North America are strongly encouraged to apply as well as racialized people, persons with disabilities, and those who identity as 2SLGBTQ+. If you require any accommodations during the application and hiring process, please let us know. Only selected candidates will be contacted for an interview. Deadline to apply is Monday, March 9, 2020.
