Announcing Morton VI: The Puritan Writing Contest

Morton VI comes with a cash prize of $1,000The Thomas Morton Memorial Prize for Literary Excellence is back! The Puritan is proud to announce the launch of Morton VI, this time with more cash prizes! We’re introducing a runner-up category in both fiction and poetry and, for the first time ever, we’ll be announcing a shortlist here on the blog and on the magazine in early November. This year, submissions will be even easier. You can submit and pay directly through our new Submittable.Morton VI isn’t just about finding great new short stories and poetry, it’s one of our fundraisers. Your entry fee first pays for the prizes themselves. We use everything leftover to help pay writers for their work and start new creative projects. We’re a volunteer magazine committed to paying contributors competitive rates and keeping every issue free online. Entering Morton VI doesn’t just give you a shot at winning a great prize that includes cash and books, it also helps us keep coming out with new issues.

WHAT THE THOMAS MORTON WRITING CONTEST OFFERS

The Thomas Morton Memorial Prize in Literary Excellence is awarded to the single best submission in the respective categories of poetry and fiction. The prize is open for submissions from anywhere in the world each year from April 1st to September 30th through the publication’s online submissions manager. The judges for 2017’s prize are Heather O’Neill (for the short story contest) and Suzanne Buffam (for the poetry contest).In addition to publication in Issue 39: Fall 2017, each winning author of the writing contest receives $1000, and each runner-up will receive $200. All winners and runners-up will also receive a prize pack of books and subscriptions, from a list of publications we will update as they are confirmed.Winners of the writing competition will be announced at our annual Black Friday celebration and year-in-review party in Toronto, Ontario in late November 2017.Submit here to enter the Thomas Morton Prize Writing Contest!
